We’re Expanding Our Team!

As we prepare for the launch of our new platforms, we are also working on several projects behind the scenes. This is an invitation to become part of our family.

The openings include both paid and volunteer positions. Some pertain to highly visible projects; others are for behind-the-scenes work. Please check our application guidelines, and use the forms to submit an application. You can also email [email protected].

Our Hiring Philosophy

We have a reputation for mature, incisive political analysis, but our first identity is as activists. This shapes our approach; we turn our eyes not only to the power of the elites, but to the struggle for liberty and justice within our societies. Our project is a child of the Arab Spring, and our team was formed by an exiled dissident and refugee, not by privileged elites or detached researchers. We aren't covering our regions of interest from the point of view of those far removed from the effects or consequences of what they're analyzing - we have skin in the game.

This factors in our hiring choices; whilst we welcome talent from across the board, we seek out native activists, refugees, exiled dissidents, and other individuals who have a real and personal stake in the cause, and an intimate connection to the regions we cover.

Our Philosophy of Volunteering

Kawaakibi Foundation started out as a volunteer initiative, and volunteers have formed the backbone of our team since we started working in 2013 - and nobody paid us for our work for most of our team’s existence. We fully understand the power of committed volunteers, especially when there’s vision and energy to guide us and back us up.

If you’re looking to help where you can on general tasks that come up during our campaigns, you can put down your name in our volunteer’s register. This is a list of people who we’ll call upon whenever we’re working on a campaign, have our hands full, and need an extra hand. Find the form here.

If you’re willing to make a longer time commitment, or you have a very specific position in mind that reflects your specific skills or talent, you can browse our open positions below or write to us at [email protected].

Whichever level of commitment fits you, here are some general points to keep in mind:

  • We’re a growing team, both in size and in resources. Whenever we’re able to add a paid position to our team, we’ll always prioritize our volunteers.
  • We are a distributed team, not based together in an office, so self-motivation, communication skills, and good digital security practices are a must.

Current Positions

Volunteer positions:

Writer/Editor - Arab Tyrant Manual Expand

Available Positions: 2

As we launch our new online platforms, we are looking for writers and editors to become early members of our start-up team. The position entails editing articles and reports for publishing, and may include original research and writing.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate excellent writing and editing skills in English, as well as deep interest in the subject matter, background knowledge, and research & analysis skills. Knowledge of Arabic would be a bonus.

We are a distributed team, so self-motivation, communication skills, and good digital security practices are a must.

Both paid contract positions and part-time-volunteer positions are available - all could leads to a longer-term paid position as we grow. Applicants must be ready to start immediately.

Please note that, as a matter of principle, when assessing applications of equivalent skill levels, Kawaakibi Foundation will always prioritize applications from native talent, refugees, and marginalized voices.

Apply here.

People we're permanently on the look out for, in undefined roles:

Software developers Expand

We're in need of skilled coders to build solutions to our problems.

We want to build software and internal tools to support our workflows, empower our team, and enhance our productivity and knowledge management. These can range from simple scripts to full-blown app suites. We need someone to help us do that - or ideally, to take charge, since we're so busy.

We're looking for independent software developers who care about both what we do and about management thinking and knowledge management, and are willing to donate their time and expertise toward building tools with us, as partners. We can provide strategic direction and vision, an audience/market and funding.

We also need coders who want to play a role in envisioning and building external systems that interface with society, government and culture, give civil society an edge against authoritarian government and redefine what's possible - from digital security, to anti-corruption software to cryptocurrency.

Visual communicators Expand

One thing we do a lot is communicate, and we can never do it well enough. If you're an illustrator, artist or visual designer who's passionate about communication and about the areas we work in - especially human rights, the MENA region, mental health or anti-authoritarianism - then lets have a conversation.

Mental health experts Expand

Human rights work is associated with a very high rate of PTSD, and the residents and former-residents of our region include countless refugees, exiles and victims of war, violence and state repression. The ability to heal from these experiences can make the difference between continuing to fight and succumbing to trauma.

We're working on several early-stage projects hoping to make a difference in this field. If you're a therapist or other mental health professional, get in touch at [email protected] to talk about how we can work together.

We value initiative - if you know how to make one of our projects better, or have a powerful idea and the skills to help make it happen, let us know.
