In his final years, the impact of disinformation and online platform manipulation on free speech, democracy, and the public sphere was a major concern to the late Jamal Khashoggi, and in 2018 we set out to investigate and uncover systemic online platform manipulation with him, starting with Twitter. He died before he could fulfil this mission, but we continued the work in his name.
Today, commemorating four years since his murder, we announce the upcoming launch of the Jamal Khashoggi Disinformation Monitor, a program of Kawaakibi Foundation dedicated to studying and counteracting disruption and manipulation of the information ecosystems of the MENA and the world. The monitor has operated since 2018, but in the coming months we will publicly announce the team, projects and institutional partnerships.
Only with an free, open and inclusive public sphere can the people of the MENA build a democratic, peaceful and prosperous future together, and fighting for that public sphere is our mission.
